Portrait of a Diva

Anna Maria Kaufmann is a Diva. One of the most beautiful and captivating voices of our time, she is a symbol of elegance and an enduring musical genius.

After her studies in the Dusseldorf College of Music, Anna Maria made her spectacular breakthrough into stardom in 1990 in the female leading role of „Christine” in the German production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's international-smash musical „The Phantom of the Opera“. In over 500 appearances she charmed and captivated nearly one million theatergoers with her clear, soaring voice and magnetic stage presence. The German soundtrack album to „The Phantom of the Opera“ − featuring Anna Maria Kaufman − sold 2 million copies and was certified triple-platinum. For her brilliance in this role she was honored with the prestigious prizes of „Golden Europe Prize“ by the German State Television Corporation (ARD) and the "Golden Lion“ from Radio Luxembourg.

After this phenomenal initial success Anna Maria enjoyed a string of extraordinary triumphs as she was featured in critically acclaimed leading roles in musicals like „Cabaret", „Evita", „Jesus Christ Superstar“, „West Side Story“ and „My Fairly Lady“.

But the incomparable talents of Anna Maria Kaufmann are many-sided. She received plaudits for her performances in lead roles in the international Opera productions of „Mikado“, „La Traviata“, „Lucia di Lammermoor“, „Die sieben Todsünden“, „Firebrand of Florence“, „Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny“, „Die Zauberflöte“, „Il Pagliacci“, as well as a magnificent „Tosca“. She also starred in various Operetta productions, among them „Die Herzogin von Chicago“, „Die Fledermaus“, „Der Zigeunerbaron“, and „Wiener Blut “, which were featured in diverse European Opera Houses such as the Frankfurt Alte Oper and the Viennese Volksoper.

As a female soprano Anna Maria Kaufmann has performed with the most famous international orchestras and conductors, among them the Vancouver Opera, the Hamilton Opera, the Florida Symphony Orchestra (Sarasota), the BBC Radio Concert Orchestra (London), the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (London), WDR Rundfunkorchester (Cologne), the Leipzig Gewandhausorchester, the Stuttgart Philharmonic, NDR Radio-Philharmonic (Hannover), the Hungarian Philharmonic, the Arthur Rubinstein Philharmonie, the Philharmonie der Nationen with Justus Frantz, the German Symphony Orchestra (Berlin) under the direction of John Mauceri, the MDR Symphony Orchestra, and the Frankfurt Symphony Orchestra. She has also undertaken international concert tours to Canada, South Korea, the United States, Spain, Austria, England, as well as extensive tours in Germany.

Among Anna Maria’s many famous duet-partners are Thomas Hampson, Nicolai Gedda, Peter Hofmann, René Kollo, Roberto Saccà, and in the „Crossover” arena, Barry Manilow, Joey Tempest, Mike Batt, André Rieu, as well as Xavier Naidoo and Söhne Mannheims.

Anna Maria’s affinity for football − a passion which she has demonstrated musically in several major sporting events – is also fascinating. During the 1988 European Championship she sang the anthem of the German national Football team − the official song of the German Football Association – before the national team’s games. In 1996, before the final of the European Football Championship, she performed the German national anthem for more than 800 million international television viewers. She performed for nearly one billion global television spectators before the Football World Championship semi-final between Germany and South Korea in Seoul. And in the summer of 2006, during the Football World Championships in Germany, she gave a famous concert seen by millions with the Bavarian Symphony Orchestra (BDR Sinfonieorchester), the Munich Philharmonic, and the Bavarian State Orchestra under the direction of Zubin Mehta and in duet with the pop singer Xavier Naidoo.

Anna Maria is also well known to European television viewers as an accomplished actress through appearances in such programs as „Tatort (Scene Of The Crime)“, „Peter Strohm“, and „Verbotene Liebe (Forbidden Love)”. She has also appeared regularly in popular German television series such as „Wetten dass...?“, „Willkommen bei Carmen Nebel“, „Johannes B. Kerner“, „Musik für Millionen“, and „Star Quiz mit Jörg Pilawa“.

Anna Maria celebrated her 20-year stage jubilee in 2009/10 with a successful solo tour named „A Musical Diva“. The highlight of the festivities was the release of the CD „A Musical Diva” (Koch Universal). Anna Maria also celebrated by giving numerous concerts as the featured guest star in the world-famous international „Holiday on Ice“ tour.
